Academics at St Luke's

Picture
Welcome to St. Luke's School where the love of learning is intertwined with the Catholic faith. We provide students with a values-based education within the context of a rigorous academic program. This all takes place in a stimulating yet structured environment.

The curriculum of St. Luke's School is guided by our mission statement and the mission of the Diocese of Providence. We seek to develop each child's spiritual, intellectual, and personal potential through a comprehensive interdisciplinary curriculum.  Intellectual curiosity, independent thinking, and excellence are the key characteristics of the academic program in which both the product and process are valued.

The integrated curriculum allows students to learn material in great depth as well as to see the natural connections that exist among academic disciplines. We believe this makes learning authentic and meaningful. Individual learning styles are fully supported and each child is appropriately challenged.

The General Studies program is divided into five core areas:  Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and World Languages. At the center of our program is Religion. Our Religion program focuses on prayer, scripture, tradition, responding to our faith, the Catholic church, Sacraments and sharing our faith. St. Luke's School helps each child to develop a strong sense of self and the desire to live a Christian life. Students grow to understand and internalize such virtues as integrity, respect, responsibility, compassion, honesty, and courage. Through daily prayer and religion classes our students respect and appreciate God's world and all those in it.

Language Arts:

The Language Arts program includes reading, writing, listening and grammar.  It is a balanced literacy program where students are encouraged to communicate and use language effectively.  Exposure to a variety of literacy genres provides an opportunity to encourage critical thinking, to teach moral values, and to emphasize respect for others and their cultures.  Children develop and refine their written communications through grammar skills, the Writing Process and the Six Plus One Writing Traits.  In addition, every student at St. Luke's School is required to read 25 books per year and every student utilizes a Writing Portfolio.

Mathematics:

The Mathematics Program emphasizes a strong foundation in basic operations and concepts while encouraging problem solving and critical thinking skills. This is done through a variety of exploration activities and the practice of essential skills. The goal is proficiency in basic mathematics, which leads to confidence to move from concrete to abstract materials.

Social Studies:

A thematic approach is used to teach Social Studies which is comprised of history, civics, economics, geography, culture, governance and global connections. Units are developed according to curricular guidelines. The study of people, places and events assists students as they create their own view of the world.

Science:

An inquiry-based approach is used to study science. Whether students are engaged in a hands-on exploration or conducting research they are encouraged to ask questions and develop strategies to answer them.
